Grunt and Lillin traversed the think forest of Campwood to go to the next town.

“Sorry for dragging you out with me instead of letting you stay with Chris,” Grunt said. “There are reasons why I brought you with me.”

“Don’t worry. I need not be there with him. I’m sure he can handle himself,” Lillin replied.

Grunt smiled. “Thank you for the understanding. You are very different from him.”

“Haha. You just don’t know him so much yet,” said Lillin. “He probably has a bad temper, but that’s because he grew up with so much hatred against the fire goblins and the Cyclops.”

“Because of what happened in Seren…” Grunt remarked.

“Yes. But don’t blame yourself,” Lillin assured. “I noticed that he’s starting to change after he learned the truth about the incident and after killing the fire goblin’s leader.”

Lillin continued, “Chris is a really nice guy. He looks tough on the outside, but he’s actually very kind towards his closest friends. The reason why I’m still alive is because of him.”

“What happened?” asked Grunt.

“I grew up without parents. I usually just wander from town to town and hope for some people to give me food or money,” Lillin narrated. “Then one day, I met a boy who treated me kindly. He was so fond of my horns and my nose. He would usually give me candies and food that he hid from his parents so that he could give them to me.”

“And that boy is Chris?” Grunt asked.

Lillin nodded. “We became close friends that’s why I stayed in their town. Finally, he introduced me to his surrogate parents, and they’ve decided to adopt me. That was the best day of my life.”

“I see. So that’s why you always talk about this debt whenever you save him from an enemy.”

“It’s more than just paying a debt,” Lillin smiled. “Chris became very close to me that I simply want to protect him so long as I’m alive.”

The two adventurers reached the end of the forest and saw that Steeltop, the village of the Gremlins, is being attacked.

“Just as expected, they are attacking the main villages of the Humans, Cyclops, Satyrs, and Gremlins!” Grunt exclaimed. “Lillin, your mission now is not just to protect Chris, but to protect everyone! Let us help the resistance until Chris finishes his training.”

“With nature’s providence! I will protect Chris, and all the things that he’s destined to protect!” Lillin said with confidence.

Chapter 13: The Test

“Am I really capable of doing that?” Chris asked.

“I wouldn’t believe it if I didn’t see it with my own eyes.” Grunt replied. “You killed Purete using your ice ability. Although it seems that you can’t consciously control it yet.”

“So where are we going?” Chris inquired again.

“To a place where you could train your ability,” was Grunt’s short reply.

The three adventurers traversed the dense forest of Campwood. After an hour of walking, they heard calm splashes of water.

Grunt looked at the two others, “We’re near.”

As they continued walking, they saw a beautiful waterfall. Colorful flowers outlined the area and there is no blade of grass, greener than the grass within the vicinity. The water is so clear, one could see even a tiny pebble at the bottom of the lake.

“This is the Waterfall of Curse and Clarity,” Grunt said. “It is a waterfall known only to a few Cyclops.”

“This waterfall is rather mysterious,” Lillin remarked. “Water continuously falls from above but the water below forms a small lake and not a river. Why isn’t it overflowing?”

“Even I don’t know the answer to that. This waterfall is full of mysteries,” Grunt answered.

Chris then said, “I suppose it contains other mysteries that’s why we’re here? Unless of course you dragged us here to sightsee.”

Slightly irritated, Grunt replied, “It is not called Curse and Clarity for nothing. In the islet in the middle of the lake, you have to stay still for ten days. You cannot eat, drink, sleep…”

“What!?” Chris exclaimed. “How am I going to survive for ten days without those?”

“If you are really one of the destined children, you will not feel anything during the first nine days,” Grunt explained. “The waterfall is supposed to clear your mind and be able to let you control your ability at will.”

“You said I have to stay there for ten days. So what will happen to me on the tenth day?” asked Chris.

Grunt’s tone became very serious. “The first nine days will only test if you’re a destined child. The tenth day will test if you are strong enough to control your ability. As I said, you won’t feel anything on the first nine days, but on the tenth day, you will feel everything your body has gone through during those nine days. Also, it is said that the pain would be thrice as much.”

“Sounds tough,” Chris said. “But if it’s my destiny, I will take the test and be able to complete it. Lillin, just watch me. I’ll make a wonderful pillar of ice once I’m done with this.”

“We’re not staying here,” Grunt said. “We don’t have the luxury of time to wait for your training to finish. We’ll move ahead to the surrounding village and help with the resistance.”

“Good luck, Chris! May nature’s blessing be with you,” Lillin said.

Chris walked towards the lake, and almost immediately, a narrow path made of soil and clay appeared. The path led to the islet. Grunt and Lillin then left and went to the nearest village.

“What happened? You look upset,” Lillin asked Grunt when they finally caught up with each other.

“We have to leave this place as soon as possible,” Grunt replied. “The village cannot be saved. Let’s hurry and find a safe place.”

Lillin was troubled. “Why are you just leaving your village like that? Tell us what happened.”

“I’ll explain everything once we…” Grunt was interrupted by a strong tremor.

After a few seconds, a thick pillar of fire burst out from the direction of Ishrock. Lillin and Chris saw the massive spectacle, while Grunt couldn’t even look back.

“What kind of powerful spell is that?” Chris asked in astonishment.

“It’s the scroll of Volcanic Embers,” Grunt replied. “It’s a spell that only the Chief knows how to use. It draws some of the fire out of Uld’s core, and incinerates everything within a 50-meter radius.”

“But… what will happen to the caster?” Lillin asked.

“As I said, the spell burns everything within its range. That includes all the village raiders, but also the Chief, the other Cyclops warriors, and the village of Ishrock.”

Lillin let out a gasp. Even Chris was silenced by what he has just heard.

“At any rate,” Grunt continued, “this is not the time to mourn. We have to go to the next village. They are also probably being invaded by the Discordians.”

“I’m sorry but what’s the three of us going to do against hordes of enemies?” Chris said in a sarcastic manner.

“Did the death of the goblin leader and the fulfillment of your revenge make you a coward, now?” Grunt retorted.

“Your Chief used a strong spell that incinerated the whole village of Ishrock just to kill those nutheads!” Chris exclaimed. “What can we possibly have to protect any village from being attacked?”

“We have you,” Grunt said.

“Me?” Chris seemed confused.

Grunt sighed. “In as much as I don’t like entrusting the fate of Uld to an ill-tempered adventurer, I will have to trust what the Chief told me that you are one of the destined children.”

“You mean the one in the legends who can control one of the four elements?” Lillin interrupted.

“Yes,” then Grunt looked at Chris. “You possess the power to manipulate ice, one of the three forgotten elemental magic. The Chief asked me to help you in your adventures to become stronger, and to find the other three destined children who will save Uld from the Discordians.”

On the way back to Ishrock, the group of adventurers noticed black smoke coming again from the direction of the village. They all hurried back, although they couldn’t travel very fast because Chris is still very weak and exhausted from the last encounter.

“Lillin, you take care of Chris and follow,” Grunt said. “I have to hurry back! I have to know what’s happening to my village!”

Lillin nodded. “I understand. Hurry now! May nature’s blessing be with you.”

Grunt hurried to his village while Lillin slowly walked with Chris. The battle seems to be very intense as the war cry and gunshots echo across Dustwind Valley.

“Hold your ground mighty Cyclops! Smite anyone who dares stain our village!” shouted one of the Cylcops captains.

Ishrock is being overrun by a much larger number of yetis and ice wolves. Casualties were minimal during the previous battle, but this one is different. Bodies of dead Cyclops lay alongside several of the killed raiders. When Grunt finally reached the village, he went straight to the village chief. He saw the village chief, preparing a scroll that contains sealed spells.

Grunt exclaimed, “The Scroll of Volcanic Embers! Chief, you can’t possibly be…”

“Yes I am,” the Chief interrupted. “The Discordians are wreaking havoc all over Uld. It is only a matter of time before our village is overrun.”

“No! We will protect this village!”

Gorlon sighed, “Brave warrior, it is inevitable. I have kept this scroll for this very moment. This moment when all villages will be attacked by the Discordians, and only a few brave souls will be able to suppress it.”

Grunt shook his head. “I don’t understand!”

“How was your journey with the human? Is my intuition correct?” Gorlon asked.

“Yes. Chris was able to manipulate the element of ice, but he doesn’t know yet how to use it properly.” Grunt replied.

Gorlon smiled. “I see. Chris, is indeed a destined child. According to the legends, four heroes will emerge, each controlling one of the four elements. Even the three elements, long-forgotten by many generations, will be revived. They will be the ones who will save Uld from the Discordians.”

Grunt remained silent. He couldn’t understand what the Chief was trying to tell.

“Where are your companions? Leave the village and go with them. Your task is to guide the destined child so that he’ll grow strong.” Gorlon ordered. “In your adventures, you may find the other three destined children who will save Uld. Promise me this, valiant warrior.”

“I understand,” Grunt replied.

Gorlon continued, “Go now! Meet with your new friends and be strong! The fires from this scroll will put a scar in the face of Uld that will never be forgotten. It will also mark the start of the four heroes’ destinies.”

Grunt ran back towards the direction of his companions. He slew the ice wolves and yetis that blocked his way. It was a sad moment for him to leave the chief and his village, knowing the fiery outbreak that will spell their demise. But the brave warrior moved forward, carrying with him his Chief’s last command.

Chapter 10: Clear as a Crystal

Chris whirled his sword in the air and the ice fragments floating around his body bonded together and formed a sharp icy spear. He dropped his shield and formed signs with his fingers. Slowly, water from the cavern formed two pillars that intersected Purete’s hands and feet. With a snap of his fingers, Chris froze the water and turned it into thick ice. He waved his sword and pointed it towards Purete. Almost immediately, the spear flew towards the dreadful goblin, and pierced through its body.

Chris fainted due to exhaustion, but the icy pillars kept the dead body of Purete in standing position. All the other fire goblins became disorganized and started to run. Lillin, on the other hand, recovered consciousness and looked around.

“Chris!” she exclaimed when she saw Chris lying in the middle of the room.

“Don’t worry,” said Grunt. “I think he’s fine.”

“What happened?” asked Lillin.

Grunt slowly positioned Chris in sitting position on a huge rock.

“It is like what the Chief told me,” Grunt began. “The Chief noticed Chris’ ability during his last attack that killed Priotus. Your companion knows how to control the element of ice.”

Lillin looks confused. “I don’t understand. Control of the other elements was lost several years ago. The only ancient magic that was passed to us is manipulation of the fire element. How can this be possible?”

“I couldn’t believe the Chief as well,” Grunt said. “But when I saw Chris, controlling the element of ice, I realized that it is true. However, it seems that he cannot fully control his powers yet.”

Lillin looked at Purete’s dead body. “Such thick wall of ice! Even when the caster is unconscious, the ice remains solid.”

“Indeed. Let us wait here and let Chris recover,” Grunt remarked. “Using that ability may have drained out most of his energy.”

“Yes. There is no reason to hurry. I am sure the burden of revenge has been lifted from Chris with the death of the fire goblin’s leader.” Lillin said with content.

Grunt sat down to rest while Lillin continued to observe the ice spectacle. Looking at Purete, she suddenly stopped.

“Not again! Something’s wrong!” Lillin exclaimed.

Grunt immediately stood up and asked, “What’s the matter?”

Lillin shook her head. “Look at his eyes! It has the same black stripes as the bear that we killed on our way to Ishrock.”

“Now that you mention it, I noticed that Priotus’ eyes were different too.” Grunt mentioned. “We have to go back to the chief! We have a lot to tell him.”

Chapter 9: The Hidden Talent Revealed

“Dieeee!!!!!” Chris’ scream resounded with fury.

Fire goblins fell to the ground one by one with every swing of Chris’ sword. Grunt, on the other hand, slowly pounded his opponents to the ground. Lillin maintained a safe distance and shot any goblin that tried to go near.

As more goblins came into the room, Chris ran immediately towards their leader to quickly finish it off. The goblins quickly surrounded him to protect their leader.

“Slicing dervish!” Chris shouted while whirling his sword.

The attack killed all the goblins around him. He then dashed towards the leader, but Purete used its fire magic to fend Chris off.

“Chris!” Lillin shouted with worry.

“I’m fine!” Chris shouted back, but he’s suffering from major burns.

The two couldn’t help him because of the sheer number of fire goblins in the room. Purete prepared to cast his deadliest fire attack and aimed it at Chris. After a few seconds, fiery rocks fell from the ceiling of the cavern and fell straight at Chris.

“Chris, no!!!” Lillin screamed.

She charged her remaining mana to fire her ultimate attack.

“Electric cannon!”

Several bursts of electricity came from her rifle and killed most of the fire goblins in the room. She then slowly fell on her feet due to exhaustion. Grunt rushed towards her to protect her from the other goblins that are still alive.

On the other hand, the rocks that fell at Chris started to move and the flames started to freeze. Slowly, cracks from the rocks appeared, and broke into pieces. Grunt couldn’t believe what he just saw.

“Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!” Chris’s voice echoed again in the entire room.

His body is covered with white smoke and small shards of ice are floating around him. He looks very calm, yet his power is much greater than before.

“It can’t be! The chief is right…” Grunt exclaimed.

Chapter 8: Calming of the Waves

“So before we reach the Cavern of Firefall, we have to pass through Dustwind Valley, right?” Chris asked for confirmation.

Lillin replied, “Yes, which means that we probably need to kill the green goblins first before we reach your real enemy. Let’s proceed silently and keep confrontations at a minimum.”

“Who cares? Green or fire, they’re all goblins and they are all enemies. Let’s kill whichever goblin is on sight,” Chris arrogantly said.

“I’m taking back what I said to you before,” Grunt intervened. “It seems that you did not inherit your father’s courage. You are just plain stupid and arrogant.”

Chris retorted, “Coming from a war-freak Cyclops? You’re just following us so keep out of this conversation.”

Chris continued walking. Lillin briefly talked to Grunt and apologized for Chris’ behavior. They followed him shortly after. While striding through the scorching heat of the valley, the two noticed that Chris is walking very carefully, cautious of his surroundings. Lillin and Grunt looked at each other with a smile.

“Stop!” Chris suddenly but silently exclaimed.

A group of green goblins walked through a narrow passage, and then disappeared from sight. Lillin and Grunt became even more astonished and intrigued, but they went ahead without uttering a single word. After a few hours of careful travelling, the three successfully passed through Dustwind Valley without being seen by the enemy.

“There’s the Cavern of Firefall,” Lillin said.

Chris looked back and gave a smile.

The three travelers carefully entered the cavern. Inside, they saw fire goblins that are busy mining something from the site. Confrontation is inevitable. They rushed towards the goblins and killed as many as they can before the goblins could alert their leader. They pushed deeper and deeper into the cavern until they came upon a huge room.

Waiting for them are several fire goblins, and their leader Purete. The size of their leader is almost ten times the size of a normal fire goblin. Chris, however, is so determined, he didn’t even show a sign of fear.

Chris and Grunt ran towards the horde, while Lillin stayed at the back to support them.

Mythos Novel - Chapter 7: Moving Forward

Chris and Lillin prepared to set out early the next morning. The sun shone beautifully. The village went back to its calm and peaceful state, as if no battle occurred just the day before.

“Aaaahh… it’s time to leave,” Lillin cheerfully said. “This is such a nice place, but the cold wind is too much for my skin.”

“Yeah…” Chris gave a weak reply.

Lillin felt sorry for Chris and gave him a hug. “It’s going to be alright, Chris.”

“All this time, I believed that the Cyclops abandoned us. My anger for them was just as much as my anger towards the fire goblins,” Chris said. “I can’t believe that I was wrong all along.”

“Where’s the strong-hearted Chris that I knew for a long time?” asked Lillin. “I’m sure the Chris that I know will just charge forward and kill fire goblins instead of thinking about something unnecessary.”

Chris let out a small smile. “Was that a compliment or an insult? Anyway, you’re right. Now I’ll definitely make sure there’s no fire goblin left in Uld before I die!”

Grunt and Gorlon went out of the house and saw Chris and Lillin.

“Leaving already?” asked Grunt.

“Yes. There’s no more reason for us to stay here,” replied Chris.

“I’ll come with you,” Grunt said.

Chris and Lillin were both surprised. Chris then asked, “Why are you coming with us? You don’t even know where we’re going.”

“I don’t have to know where. I just know that you’re going out to kill the fire goblins,” Grunt said. “I’ll help you. That’s what the village chief wants.”

Chris smiled, “If you’re going to help us, then you’re welcome to join. Just make sure you kill more than you eat. Haha.”

“Good luck with your journey, young ones,” Gorlon said. Then, he went to Grunt and said, “Farewell warrior. Remember what I told you last night.”

The three warriors walked towards the west, to follow the rumor about the fire goblin leader’s whereabouts. All of them are aware of the danger that’s coming to them, but they are all walking bravely, each with personal goals in mind.
