Open beta ended at 5pm PDT on September 19th.  Now, there's a few things you'll need to know in preparation for the Collector's Edition head start (on the evening on the 21st though boxes aren't expected until the 22nd) or the Standard Edition's release (on the 30th).

I noticed that this was posted up a little while ago on the official site, and it has some important things of note on it.  Those are the indented bits here, followed by what I find so interesting about them in the non-indented space below:

At 18:00 (PDT) on Sep. 21, 2010, early access to the Realm of Eorzea will begin. The official service is scheduled to begin on Sep. 30, 2010.

Note that most retailers will have the collector's edition in stock (assuming it's not all preordered) on the 22nd, so lucky you if you manage to get your hands on a copy early, as Square-Enix will be ready for you 6pm PDT on September 21st , the day before.  The "official service" refers to non-collector's-edition.

- Uninstalling the Beta Client after the Conclusion of the Open Beta Test
After the Open Beta Test comes to an end, please uninstall FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version.

Installing the release version of FINAL FANTASY XIV or other software developed by our company while FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version remains installed may cause certain issues. Should you uninstall FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version after installing the release version, certain settings may be reset.

This is vital, you must uninstall your Beta Client.  That's important to note for two reasons:

1. Because in many MMORPGs you can use the same beta client, but not here.
2. Because if you still have the beta client installed, it will actually cause your retail copy to malfunction.

- Transferring Character Names to the Official Release
Participants of the Open Beta Test will be able to transfer their character names to the official release. As long as the World selected in the Open Beta Test and the official release are the same, the character name used in the open beta test will be usable in the official release.

* Upon transferring the character name, both the selection of the World and character name data needs to be inputted properly. Please make sure to remember both the World your character resided on and the name of the character you used during the Open Beta Test.
* It will not be possible to transfer names that have been determined to be inappropriate.
* After the Open Beta Test has concluded, the character names listed on the account will be transferable.

It's a bit late to reserve names now, since the beta is over, but remember the name of your character should be reserved for you on the server you played that same-named character on beta.

- Notice to Those Who Purchased "FINAL FANTASY XIV Collector's Edition"
Upon the start of early access, server congestion on the Square Enix Account Management System is expected. By completing the following process now, you will be able to smoothly begin your adventure.

1. Register a Square Enix Account Beforehand
For those of you who have not obtained a Square Enix account, please go to http://account.square-enix.com/regist/ and complete the registration process.

2. Selecting a Payment Method
Square Enix Crysta can be selected as the payment method for monthly service fees.
*Additional payment methods will become available after the Square Enix Account Management System maintenance, which is scheduled to be Sep. 20, 2010 from 19:00 to 23:00 (PDT).

Basically, they're trying to cut down on the amount of time we spend clogging the account server.  Unfortunately, we're still going to need to hit that account server anyway because we'll need to enter our registration keys, but at least you can cut down on having to go a few more pages.   If you can log in here, you're already registered, but can save time later by selecting your payment method now.  You may want to wait until the 21st, as additional payment methods will become available.

- Transferal of a FINAL FANTASY XI Player Character name to FINAL FANTASY XIV
When creating a new FINAL FANTASY XIV character, FINAL FANTASY XI players’ character names will be prioritized. The character’s name will become “Given Name: the Player Character’s name in FINAL FANTASY XI” + “Surname: the name of the Player Character’s World.”

* Please note that you will not be able to transfer your Player Character name in the following cases:
- If you have created a character before linking your PlayOnline ID (It is, however, possible to transfer Player Character names by deleting the characters you created, linking your PlayOnline ID, and then re-creating your characters).
- If, at the time of creating your FINAL FANTASY XIV character, the linked PlayOnline ID’s FINAL FANTASY XI Content IDs are invalid (the Content IDs have been cancelled and are thus not being billed).
- If the linked PlayOnline ID’s FINAL FANTASY XI is in the free trial period.
- If there are no FINAL FANTASY XI characters on the linked PlayOnline ID.
*If you have recently created a character, transferred Worlds, or used the Character Reactivation Service on FINAL FANTASY XI, it may take some time before you can transfer your Player Character name to FINAL FANTASY XIV.
* Users can create characters with new names, regardless of whether a PlayOnline ID is linked or not.

Good for you Final Fantasy XI migrants to know.

- In-Game Bonus Items
To receive the in-game bonus items, such as those that came bundled with FINAL FANTASY XIII (the initial batch only), or the FINAL FANTASY XIV Collector's Edition, or the FINAL FANTASY XIV Standard Edition, you will need to register the item codes. To register an item code, please follow the steps below:

1. Log into the Square Enix Account Management System (https://secure.square-enix.com/account/)
2. Select the "Select Service" option under "Service and Options"
3. Select "FINAL FANTASY XIV," and then "Add a service account"
4. Enter the corresponding item code, and then select "Next"

* The in-game bonus item will be applied to the corresponding FINAL FANTASY XIV service account once the registration is complete.
* When you create a character on the corresponding FINAL FANTASY XIV service account, the character will start off with the in-game bonus item in its possession. Please note that characters created prior to the registration of the item code(s) will not receive the in-game bonus item, so make sure you register any codes prior to the character creation process.

Important note: If you create your character before you registered that item code, you will not be getting that item on that character.  Oh, I just know somebody's going to screw this one up and feel bad about it.

- Perks for Simultaneous Players of Both FINAL FANTASY XI and FINAL FANTASY XIV
If a PlayOnline ID with an active FINAL FANTASY XI Content ID is linked to a Square Enix account with a FINAL FANTASY XIV service account, all new characters created on that FINAL FANTASY XIV service account will start out possessing an in-game bonus item.

* Please note that you will not be able to receive a special in-game item in the following cases:
- If you have created a character before linking your PlayOnline ID (It is, however, possible to receive the in-game item by deleting the characters you created, linking your PlayOnline ID, and then re-creating your characters).

Want those Hermes Boots?  Well, you must have linked your PlayerOnline ID to your Square-Enix account and your Final Fantasy XI service must be active on that linked account.  Again, this must be done before creating your character in Final Fantasy XIV.

Thanks geldonyetich for head-ups!

I have a problem tho ... I used to play FFXI years ago and for some reason I just can't get to think of my password on Play Online anymore (I literally tried all possible combinations I could have possibly used) and there's no way on the account management website to request a password change, anyone who can help me with this?

I also can't combine my Square Enix members and ID with eachother either for some reason either, it kept saying "service not available", gonna try again now.

I did a bit of googling for you and came up with this:

Turns out that the Playonline system doesn't have an automated password recovery mechanism and you'll need to contact them.  Perhaps they can fix that other issue you're having with merging accts while you're doing that.

Well, that's it, beta is over.  Giving this a bump just because it's a likely time that the people who were playing the game up until the last are likely to hit the forums, and need to know this to avoid later difficulties.

Yup that's what I did, they got back to me in less than 24 hours you just have to answer your secret question and give them your birthday I think, if I remember correctly.

You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? And no, I don't want your flippin' carrot. If you can't do that give me back my youth and keep the change. Why don't you try chasing your own damn carrot for a change? I'll gladly hold the stick.

I simply called them, much faster:

Got my issue resolved quickly and painlessly.  Not at all how I remembered playonline, for a second I was thinking to myself how maybe I had remembered them too harshly... then I remembered everything.  It was only that one second.

I only do that if I'm getting BS answer or am in a hurry. Like EA... got those assholes on speed dial.

Hah, I've read the same thing in time management books.  We procrastinators get a bad rap.

In addition to uninstalling the beta, does one need to delete any of the remaining folders or whatnot? Or can the folder stay?

It's very important upon completion of the beta to uninstall the game and move onto something else. Square Enix is very appreciative for your assistance but needs you to stop paying their bills so they can determine it's time to fix the game before you trick them into ruining their reputation by thinking the game must be okay due to sales and subscriber numbers. Square Enix thanks your dearly.
