Like the title says, how would you rate the fun you had in your MMO gaming the past years, and why?

Here's mine:

2000-2001: 9-9.5

A golden period, my 1st introduction to MMORPG's, worlds were vast, the playerbase was different, people were not as jaded, spoilt or indifferent yet as they'd become in later years, there were a lot more MMO gamers who actually liked things like Dungeons & Dragons and other Pen&Paper RPG's or PC RPG's in general. It was a magical time, and the Ruins of Kunark and Scars of Velious expansions are imo still the best EQ expansions that were released.

end of 2004-2005: 8.5-9

A great time as well, with 3 MMO's (or 2 MMO's and 1 CORPG, whatever) that'd fill my time with many hours of fun entertainment, each in their own way. Still have a lot of great memories of EQ2, WoW and GW.

2008: 8-8.5

The year I played AoC and LotrO. While both games were fun to me, it was the extraordinary people and guilds I was with that elevated my MMO fun to higher levels than I'd expected or that these games on their own merit on average would have given.

2012: 9-10?

I actually think that this year might manage to trump my best MMO years I've had when it comes to fun. With an entertaining kick off from TOR, this year will possibly have 4 more MMO's that I'm interested in and expect to enjoy. TSW with the most original and intriguing world setting of all the MMO's I've played, GW2 with its interesting design choices and features, ArcheAge with the true sandbox/themepark hybrid model that has its own appeal, and Firefall/Planetside 2 that'll be the first MMOFPS in a long time that I'll have played..

The other years for me have been 7-8 and below when it comes to MMO fun.

Hmm I dont remember the years.

I had some fun with Lineage 2, but in the end it was not the game for me.

Then I went to Vanguard and as every other MMO out there is either outright crap or not going where I want to go, I stayed with it. I'm fairly happy in Vanguard, too.

2004-2006 9/10

I played The Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxies and Dark Age of Camelot. The worlds were huge, these were my first MMO's and everything seemed amazing, PvP was fun and nothing was necessarily too gear dependant. If I didn't want to fight 24/7 there were plenty of other things to do in these game worlds.

2007 5/10

Tried playing City of Heroes and various other MMO's I couldnt only stick with anything for more than a month or so, auto assault flopped and got shut down.

2007-2011 9/10

I started playing World Of Warcraft and I loved it, the game world was vast, there were no loading screens and once again plenty of things to do, for me WoW has become too formulaic now so thats what pushed me out eventually but the more I play other games the more I want to go back to, this is a sad fact about other games that they make me want to play WoW.

I also tried LOTRO and really enjoyed it in this time.

2011 4/10

Spent this year trying all the MMO's I missed when playing WoW, they were either a total mess of a sandbox, really old games, or big games that flopped and went F2P. Other games I tried seemed to just want to milk you from a cash shop. I couldnt stick with anything. RIFT was OK but I didnt last past the first month.

I give EVE 9/10 but I don't have the time to dedicate to it and I messed up a key part of the big giant tutorial so got lost, its the only current MMO i would like to play but I feel too far behind now.

2011-2012 6/10

So far I have only played SWTOR and I burnt out on that in 3 weeks, no desire at all to log in ever again. Some games look OK this year but I am so burnt out on MMO's that nothing feels fresh, what I want is a vast world to explore, plenty of non combat tasks to fill spare game time, no gear dependancy, decent (doesnt even have to be great) PvPvP system.

Currently playing Torchlight

2007-2009: 4/10

Runescape time. Grinding in the name of grinding in a cave-like f2p world, sometimes waiting for too long to log into and doing quests just to get that new emote. Some fun, but overall - only mediocre/bad impressions. As well as kids with "me iz runesc. admin, buy rune armor from me or get banned".

some 2006-2009: 6/10

Russian MMORPG, not listed there. Initially it was fun. I was little, I fought with some monsters, raided castles. Later I become powerfull enough for tier 1 castle and not only I hadn't to beg "plz plz accept me, plz", but they asked me if I would join. Then tier 2 castle raids came, I was too weak for the begining, but later became stronger. It was there that I first entered the guild. Alas, Guild got dissolved soon and I asked to be a member of another one. Later I lost any interest in the game. I was level 50 and all castle raids were over, I had to raid Guild-only castles or own monsters that were sometimes hard for me. Abandoned the game as it had nothing more to offer me. Still, the experience is somewhat positive.

2011-2012: 8/10

Istaria (since I created account at January 2011). Initially - superb impressions. Later, when all my suggestions were ignored (not counting 1 that was rejected) I did not feel such enthusiasm. I still enjoy the game, it offers me everything I need and no other game at the present time could offer more/better. Impressions are mostly good. I do level up and I help others to grow up or just make that quest. Hope to stay there untill I reach level 100 in each available school and finish all available quests/tasks/whatsoever.

4/10, one of the lowest ever. I had just quit EQ2 during the autumn and didn´t play that much MMOs. Mostly Guildwars and a little DDO at the side, but most my RPG time last year was in pen and paper games (which rated a lot higher).

Hopefully this year will be a lot better.)

1996, 2001 and 2005 were great years for me with 9/10.

10/10 for this year.

Having an absolute blast with SWTOR. Can't...stop...playing..... :(

Haven't even touched a single game that isn't SWTOR for the past 2.5 months.

Wonder why there seems to be more haters on the internet?

Read this by an actual marketing guy to find out why.

2000 - 2004      10/10

EverQuest - Nothing compares to my first real mmo experience, running my enchanter miles to help with the killing of a giant, obtain some gold and a little bit of exp, but we killed a giant!! or waiting to kill a skeleton at a specific time to spawn a rare mob that roamed a path that you had to kill at another specific time to spawn another mob and so on and on! Yes, I was a lot younger and the days of hourless moments of pure fun and a mmo game immersion have long long gone in my eyes. Any game after EQ has been shadowed by the fun I had then.

2004 - 2011    4/10

(Vanilla World of Warcraft was great and The Burning Crusade was a brilliant expansion) 8/10 .... during this time I was still in an EQ style of game play (take your time and enjoy the ride!) I also played Counter Strike and the balance of them sat perfectly till around Wrath, then it was all over.. Cataclysm, AoC(1 month), Aion, Warhammer, Rift, SWTOR(got bored of in 3 weeks also) these all have been a massive anti climax huge disappointment. Lotro & Eve were the only games since WoW TBC which delivered any real lasting fun.

2012 ...  ?/10

Lets not put our faith in Tera / Gw2 / WoD / TSW too much but at least all of these "to be" released titles are doing something different! Something which could hopefully change what WoW has trademarked as a real mmo and I really look forward to seeing what they have to offer!

All hail the Barn Owl! oh.. and the RED SQUIRREL!!!

2003-2005: 10/10

Was playing SWG until CU and it was simplay amazing.

2005-2012: 4/10

After SWG only GW and EVE managed to hold my interest for about 4-6 months. The rest are not even worth mentioning.

2003-2006- 10/10 - Planetside, SWG

2006-2008- 8/10 - EQ2, WoW

2009-2010- 5/10 - The start of the rot, dozens of MMOs, EvE & Fallen Earth probably the standouts.

2010-2012- 02/10 - Gave up with this crap, retried EvE lots, played SWTOR 3 weeks.

2012-2013- If Secret World tanks, another dead year.

2005 - 2008      8/10

New to mmo scene with Guild wars. Bought it because it was a b2p game and seemed interesting. Many years of creating and refining hundreds of different builds between 4 characters. In order of most favoured to least - Necro, Ranger, Mes, Ele. Played countless hours of Alliance battles and grinded that faction like the game would run out. My brilliant strategy of 'don't fight the mob' was always lost of the majority of the players but there were many many battles won or lost by a single point. Every game was a new challenge. What tactics will these enemies have? Are they splitting their team? Have they doubled up on the other side and plan to flank us? What kind of build is that guy running? Why can't I kill this Ele/Dervish?

Built some great friendships that are still going today - one guildie even sent me a video card from overseas when mine busted. Sure it was one he had just lying around but it was a little better than what I was running and then to send it overseas to some guildie? Amazed to this day.

2009 - 2011     7/10

Second MMO was WoW - I had previously trialed and foolishly made a night elf character and didn't enjoy the noob island and when i got to the mainland it was just more greyness. Second time around I made a human warlock and loved it to bits. Still something I hold in pride - was one of the best warlocks between my guild mates (but I was outgeared because I was the best DK tank in my circle of friends - guess who had to go tank all the time?) I did not wiki builds but my pro friend (an elitistjerk.com kinda player) instructed me that I should inspect good players and try to mimic them. By trying to understand the reasons behind their talent spec and changing skills to suit my personal preferences I made powerful builds inspired by better players. My skill rotation was my own - built by reading skills and testing things on the dummy.

I had tons of fun exploring WoW and also built more great friendships - I keep in contact with them through SC2 and my friend still wants me to come back and play my DK tank.

Eventually burned out the grinding treadmill after defeating the Lich King, the firelands dailies were too much for me and the charm had been lost. It is a shame really because I think it has so much to draw from yet feels so empty at the end.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

Since WOW put in BGs my gaming experience has been about 5 out of 10. Games are to easy and boring with more and more fluff; less gameplay and content. MMOs now are just online console action adventures, everyone forgot what MMOs are suppose to be and combined them with other game genres. It has killed the true MMOs gaming experience for me.

A few have been fun to level to max but when your end game is grinding over and over your MMO fails (MMOs are not suppose to be about endgame or have an endgame!). I am probably done playing MMOs because there is no longer a challenge or community in MMOs today, and this is from some old bastard who started game before most of the current gameers where born.

Yep. The fact that discussions prior to the release of MMOs used to be:

"So, what class are you going to play and what do you think crafting will be like?"

To...

"I think they should adapt the current F2P business model that has been effective in other recent games. Also, according to their published financial reports, they need to retain X% of their playerbase over Y Years to be profitable. I see this as unsustainable, based on their pre-order box figures and the impending releases of competing AAA titles. For this reason, i am out".

I'll say one thing: when i was looking for a subject to do my IT & Business degree dissertation on, i would have pissed it today, whereas back then i was writing to predict the evolution of MMOs into realistic life simulators that could be used for training and such. Alas, money talks and evolution has gone backwards.

1197-2007 - A perfect 10

2008 - A solid 4

2009 to present - A perfect 10

There are so many choices and so many new things coming out on such a regular basis that if at any point I lost interest in one MMO there was always another to check out or switch to. In 2008, however, I was constatnly disappointed both by releases and expansions. For me, it seemed a really stagnant and uneventful year across the board in MMOs. If it wasn't for Combat Arms, I would have considered 2008 a total loss.

I'd say a consistant 8. never been completely satisfied, but if I'm unhappy I move on.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
