The more you hype an upcoming game in your mind, the more it will fail to meet your expectations. |

1997-2004- A perfect 10! I played UO when it first came out, then went to DAOC and still play it know. I did play other games also like EQ,Ryzom befor it got shut down and got back up lol, AC,L2 and many many others. 2005-2011--- Not so good to be honest, Blizzard was taking over and what i would like to call the "clone era" was starting. 2012-- So far it`s not to bad, playing final fantasy xiv and loving it. Waiting for GW2 some say it`s going to be like DAOC on the PVP part. MYSPACE ACCOUNT http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=80721225 |

Nah... MMOs evolves from boring, time wasting design to better games. Online console adventures are great and the way to go. There is no such thing as what it "suppose to be". If it is fun for many, the market will follow, if not, it will change and evolve. Be more open mind and think out of the box. MMOs are changing .. just like other genres before it. |

On a scale of 1-10, some different timeframes for me and how much I enjoyed MMORPGs. 1999 to 2000 = 9 The birth of the MMORPG genre. UO was the first and naturally very prolific. EQ, a.k.a. "Evercrack" followed afterwards to its own tremendous success. This gaming genre was new; Everything is fresh. For me, there were 3 major draws to this new style of gaming. 1. Multiplayer and Community. 2. UO let you do a ridiculous amount of things in the game. Compared to past SPRPGs, the scope was bewildering. 3. Large, persistent game worlds. Combined with the above 2 points, was very enticing. 2001 to 2005 = 10 Personally, this was my "Golden Era" of MMORPGs. This is *THE* era some of the newer MMORPG players are fed up about hearing from longtime players on how the games from this timeframe were so much better (Because they ARE). More titles coming out, developers were trying to take the possibilities of this new genre to different directions and new heights. The reasons why I played were essentially the same as in the above points. The community I felt was at its height that I've ever experienced in my time playing MMORPGs, with the best one that I was a part of was with SWG. At the end of this timeframe, the eventual king of MMORPGs was born, WoW. Never played it, but everybody heard of it and the impending juggernaught it would become. For those that have forgotten, EVE is also a part of this fabled era. For me, the community and the immense possibilities of MMORPGs were big tickets. But in the great sunlight of this Golden Era, the first seeds of the eventual decline are laid in the background. Some players warned about it, but they were considered weirdos with Tinfoil Hats. 2006 to 2007 = 5 IMO, this is where things started going south. At the end of '05, I lost my "home" that was SWG when the developers drastically changed the game to make it like WoW, which was just hitting its stride as unquestionable leader of MMORPGs. From here on out, everyone literally tries to mimic WoW. This was where I start jumping from title to title, being less and less satisfied. This is the time where the player community I notice really starts to become terrible. I still vividly remember the first time experiencing this, playing Guild Wars. People group up, never say anything to anybody, and as soon as some pathetic quest is complete, leave the group without even saying, "Bye" or "Good luck." This is where newbs get hostile where, if you see them having alot of trouble with something and you run in to help, they get upset. Back in the day, any help given was appreciated, and I oftenly got new friends that way by saving their bacon in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by hostile NPCs. 2008 to 2009 = 0 This was a very catastrophic era, IMO, with MMORPGs. I still jumped from title to title. Problems with community are still terrible (to be more exact, "community" is nonexistent in MMORPGs... still). I was becoming annoyed with the increasingly shallow gameplay and lack of options in playing, creating your character, and building your character. I was getting exasperated with the minimalization of the "Multiplayer" part of MMORPGs, making the game cater far more to Single Player friendliness. To top it off, this was an era of 2 major, colossal, titanic level failures: Age of Conan and Warhammer Online. And my retarded self was there playing when these 2 failures went live. So much hype. So many cool promo / preview videos. Such great advertising! So much excitement! But within 2-3 months after initial success, especially AoC who had tremendous early success, they both became failures. I saw the shallow gameplay for what it was after the "new car smell" wore off. Gameplay and technical issues were not being fixed, or told by the devs that it's always your computer and not the game's fault. How did those sieges in AoC go? I was also one of those idiots that tried out STO. Holy jeez... AoC, WAR, and STO. Can I pick 'em, or can I pick 'em? 2009 also marks when I finally quit MMORPGs altogether. Then there's the F2P movement, which rears its head in this timeframe. It's a mixed bag since some like it alot, but personally, I find it distasteful and shady. 2010 to the forseeable future = 0 I see the negative trends continuing from before, with special emphasis in killing group play / multiplayer even more. I see nothing, especially from the big name contenders, to make me even have a faint belief that they will improve. As a whole, MMORPG developers seem to have slipped down the Sarlaac Pit. Graphics may be prettier today, but their gameplay is a comical parody of what developers did and tried to do in 1999-2005. "I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." fall of 2002, DOAC DOAC.. played this with IRL friends.. the RvR was a hell of alot of fun.. My buddies stayed with the game much longer then I did... as I soon tested the open beta of Linage2 and switched game.. 2003/2004 Linage2 I played Linage2, and I had a hell of alot of fun doing it.. The thrill of losing items when I died, delevling etc and the Drama betwen guilds and the castle raids was alot of fun for me... The grind was god awfull though and I never managed to reach top level.. But the games back then were never about maxing out, like they way the are today.. You had fun on the way, and you had fun with others.. that was the hole point of playing late 2004/2005 WoW WoW released later in europe, but I was loged in the first day, Lots of downtime etc, But compared to Doac and Linage2 I was kinda blown away by all the quests.. I remeber my Hunter fondly.. when I tamed my Bear.. For me personaly WoW was a fresh breeze, I had tested out a few mmos before it, but linage2 was the only one that I played for any length of time.. Many people claim WoW stole this and that. But what they did was perfect many things that other games had tried before it. The one thing I always felt i lacked though is Guild suport, and player driven content. And that is what in 2006 made me leave the game.. 2006-2012 EVE with a few breaks A few friends of mine had been bugging me for a few years to come and play this game called EvE online, made by the Islandic company CCP.. I finaly decided to give it a try.. In EvE I found all those things that I felt was missing from WoW. Player driven econamy, player driven politics and thrilling pvp combat that brought me back to the good times I had in Linage2... But EvE was missing all the theampark ellements that the teamparks have. If you combined EvE and vanilla WoW you would probably have the best game ever made.. 2007-2012 while being subscribed to EvE or on a break.. I have serched for that combination.. Theampark/sandbx.. I have tried AOC, Warhamer online, City of hearos/villans, guildwars, champions online, Lotro, Pirates of the burning sea, STO, matrix online, Tabula Rasa and many others.. sadly None of them have deliverd what I truly want from an MMORPG... Slowly but steadaly I have become more and more Unhappy with the state of thing in the genre... I had hoped we would see more diversity and innovation through the years and the only thing we have gotten is more stagnation... With AION going totaly free to play in europe February 16 im going to try it out.. its made by the same people who did Linage2.. and asien MMOS are often about its players.. and its a bit grindy.. maybe it can keep me Interested untill that Magical theampark/sandbox im looking for gets made....I'm keeping my fingers crossed... |

1999-2005: 10/10 EQ, Ultima Online, DAOC, Anarchy Online, SWG, Planetside, City of Heroes, World of Warcraft... Anamazing 6 years of MMORPGs. Part of the reason I did so bad in highschool. 2006-2009: 5/10 Vanguard, EQ2, Eve, AoC Shit wasn't very good, slowly phasing out of MMORPGs due to lack of quality. 2010-2012: 2/10 SWTOR, Rift, SWG, Uncharted Waters, UO Free Shards, Xyson, EQ Project 1999 Desperate for a decent MMORPG. SWTOR and Rift sucked and just as I was adjusting back into SWG it closes down. Hoping TSW, GW2, or ArcheAge can bring be back to quality MMORPGing. The only brightspot in this list is project 1999, but unfortunately EQ is a timesink and I didn't have the tim to play it like I used to. Plus the population was dwindling.
